Wireless charging is convenient—until you place your phone on the charger and nothing happens.

Maybe the phone doesn’t recognize the charger at all. Maybe charging starts and stops repeatedly. Or it only works when the phone is positioned in exactly the right spot.

At TruFix Phone & Tech in Greenville, SC, we diagnose charging problems on iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, and other smartphones. A wireless charging problem doesn’t automatically mean the charging coil inside your phone has failed.

Common Signs of a Wireless Charging Problem

You may notice:

* the phone doesn’t start charging

* charging repeatedly starts and stops

* wireless charging is unusually slow

* the phone only charges in one specific position

* the phone becomes unusually hot

* wired charging works normally, but wireless charging doesn’t

* wireless charging stopped working after a drop or repair

These symptoms can have several different causes.

1. Check the Wireless Charger First

Before assuming the phone needs repair, test the charger.

Wireless charging pads, cables, and power adapters can fail just like standard chargers.

Try a known-working compatible wireless charger and power adapter.

If your phone charges normally with another charger, the problem probably isn’t inside the phone.

2. Your Phone Case May Be Interfering

Some cases can interfere with wireless charging, particularly if they’re unusually thick or contain metal components.

Remove the case and place the phone directly on the charger.

Also check for cards, magnetic accessories, metal plates, or other objects between the phone and charging pad.

3. Phone Position Matters

Wireless charging depends on alignment between the charging coil inside the phone and the coil inside the charger.

If the two coils aren’t positioned correctly, charging may not begin—or it may repeatedly disconnect.

This is why a phone that only charges when positioned very precisely doesn’t necessarily have a completely failed charging coil.

4. Damage After a Drop

The wireless charging system is located inside the back of the phone.

A hard impact can potentially damage the charging assembly or its connections even when the back glass doesn’t completely shatter.

If wireless charging stopped immediately after a drop, physical damage should be considered.

5. Cracked or Previously Repaired Back Glass

A cracked back panel itself doesn’t automatically disable wireless charging.

However, severe impact damage or problems introduced during a previous back-glass repair can affect components located underneath the rear housing.

Wireless charging problems that begin immediately after a repair should therefore be properly diagnosed rather than assumed to be a charger problem.

6. Liquid Damage or Corrosion

Liquid exposure can affect connectors and internal charging components.

The phone may continue working normally while wireless charging becomes intermittent or stops altogether.

Corrosion can also develop over time, meaning the problem may appear days or weeks after the original liquid exposure.

7. Software Problems

Not every wireless charging failure is hardware-related.

Restart the phone and check for available system updates before assuming a component needs replacement.

Temporary software issues can sometimes interfere with charging behavior.

Why Does Wired Charging Work but Wireless Charging Doesn’t?

This is an important diagnostic clue.

Wired and wireless charging use different components to deliver power to the phone.

If the charging port works normally but several known-working wireless chargers don’t, the problem becomes more likely to involve the phone’s wireless charging system, its connections, or related hardware.

That doesn’t mean the charging coil should automatically be replaced. Proper testing should come first.

Why Does Wireless Charging Keep Starting and Stopping?

Intermittent wireless charging can be caused by:

* poor alignment

* an incompatible or failing charger

* a thick case

* excessive heat

* unstable power from the adapter

* internal charging-system problems

Testing without the case and with a known-working charger helps narrow down the cause.

Does the Wireless Charging Coil Need Replacement?

Not necessarily.

Depending on the diagnosis, the solution could be as simple as replacing the charger or removing an incompatible case.

If the problem is inside the phone, repair options depend on the exact device and the component that failed.

Replacing parts before identifying the cause can waste time and money.
